Safety requirements for the emptying of semi-underfloor containers
Semi-underground systems are partially sunk into the ground during installation. As a result, they offer a significantly larger waste capacity than above-ground systems and traditional four-wheeled bins. When the containers are removed from semi-underground systems, a pit up to 500 mm deep is left in the ground. For a long time, this was in compliance with DIN EN 13071 – the standard for stationary waste collection containers – and safety measures were not required.
However, safety requirements have changed, and the standard now requires this recess to be secured when the container is removed from the collection shaft for emptying, cleaning and maintenance. And this is precisely where Villiger offers a ready-made and patented solution with the Sub-Safety safety platform.
Sub-Safety provides safety in accordance with DIN EN 13071
The Sub-Safety safety platform for semi-underfloor systems is fitted directly into the mounting shaft beneath the container. An installation depth of approximately 50 mm is sufficient for this. The safety platform is pressed down onto the floor by the container’s own weight (approx. 400 kg).
When the container is removed, the weight of the container is no longer present and the safety platform moves upwards automatically. The recess is thus closed at the same time as the container is removed. The safety platform moves upwards to such an extent that, in its final position, it is no lower than 210 mm below the top of the receiving shaft at any point.
This ensures the platform complies exactly with the standard, particularly as it can withstand a significantly higher load of 150 kg when raised. A safety mechanism prevents the platform from lowering. Only when the container is returned does it unlock the mechanism, and the platform moves downwards together with the container.

Retrofit security solution, also suitable for existing systems
The Sub-Safety safety platform is not only suitable for new installations. It can also be integrated into existing semi-underground systems – regardless of the manufacturer. Thanks to the ability to flexibly adapt the size of the platform to different pits, it is ideally suited for retrofitting existing systems. An installation depth of approximately 50 mm below ground is sufficient for installation. Existing systems can therefore be retrofitted quickly and easily in accordance with DIN EN 13071.
Sub-Safety from Villiger is thus a key component for the safety of cities, local authorities and municipalities during the emptying of semi-underground containers, as the platform can be effortlessly integrated into existing systems and collection shafts from all manufacturers.
